development history
honor had its first developmental readings December 16 and 18, 2019, directed by Gerald vanHeerden and presented by vMHF Theatricals and A.R.T./New York Theatres at the Bruce Mitchell Room in NYC, which is part of A.R.T./New York Theatres. A second reading was streamed March 26-29, 2021, directed by vanHeerden and presented by vMHF Theatricals as a benefit for Wordsmyth Theater Company in Houston with a talkback at Wordsmyth.
Premieres October 1 - 29
This production is being staged at
the Jeffrey and Paula Gural Theatre
at the A.R.T./New York Theatres.
502 West 53rd Street, New York, NY 10019
Performance space for this production was subsidized by the A.R.T./New York Theatres Rental Subsidy Fund, a program of the Alliance of Resident Theatres/New York (A.R.T/New York).
I'm extremely fortunate that theatre colleagues believed enough in this play that it had the benefit of an old-fashioned development process: multiple staged readings and two nights of workshops. It also benefited from the constraints imposed during the early Covid pandemic: an edited, videotaped benefit reading on behalf of Wordsmyth Theatre Co. I’ve been fortunate that producer-director Gerald vanHeerden and dramaturg-director Ted Swindley have cared enough about the play to mount development presentations in NYC and Houston, and to offer a director’s perspective on how I might improve it, and that so many theatre colleagues and friends have cared enough to offer insightful comments and encouragement. They’ve all helped to make honor what it is today. I want you to know who they are.
